Community Engagement, Badger-Style

For the second summer in a row, teens from Neighborhood House-based PREP (Personal Responsibility Education Program) volunteered at the Wisconsin State Fair for the UW Madison Badger Alumnae School Supply Day. Twenty six teens,  joined by  special friend Dr. Arvind Ahuja, M.D., and his assistant Nick , helped collect cash donations plus over 100 bags of school supplies for Milwaukee area schools. It was a great opportunity to develop skills for interacting with the general public, find creative ways to increase donations, collaborate with college students, and learn more about what programs UW-Madison has to offer.

Volunteers were on hand to help with the drive , as well as other activities including science exhibits, hands-on activities and a pep rally with the Badger band and cheer squad as part of UW-Madison Day at the Wisconsin State Fair. This year’s monetary donations nearly doubled last year’s, at over $10,000. Of course it was a great day to enjoy the State Fair as well. Highlights included holding and examining a real human brain, and enjoying the fair and eating a few cream puffs!
A special shout out to  NH staff Talisa, Norman and Patrice for their great work with the teens this summer.
